Strength in character can defeat strength in numbers.

—Corman on Combat

* * *

Bug is incredibly dense.

Not in the way you think. Her body is comprised of a crystalline cellular structure that resembles steel. She’s short and slight, but can hit like a truck.

A fast-moving truck.

A fast-moving truck loaded with concrete and I-beams.

Davis rushed her in a football tackle. He probably figured his larger mass would disrupt her balance and he could slam her to the ground.

Aside from it being a scummy move against someone much smaller than he was, it was stupid. Corman was right, Davis was arrogant and overly confident.

This was going to be a harsh lesson.

Davis closed the distance and lunged for one of Bug’s legs. She blocked his forward momentum with a forearm and shot one of her legs back, dropping her center of gravity. Davis managed to get his arms around her waist as she snaked an arm around his neck.

His forward motion came to an immediate stop.

Davis grunted and struggled, but Bug wasn’t budging. He’d have an easier time trying to lift the building.

This was one of the reasons I never sparred with her.

Trying to pick Bug up from this position was going to be impossible for Davis. She dropped her full weight on his back, and smiled down at him as he futilely grunted with effort again.

Bug slowly cranked his neck around and disrupted his balance. In half a second, Davis found himself staring at the ceiling as Bug rotated his head upward and slammed him to the ground with force.

“I just killed you,” Bug said, stepping back as Davis jumped to his feet, anger evident on his face. “Trying to get the jump on me was low, by the way.”

“You have some skill,” Davis said, rubbing his neck. “It’s not going to help you when I bounce you all over this floor, munchkin.”

“This would be a good time for you to give up,” Bug said still smiling. “But you’re not going to, are you?”

“Give up? To you?” Davis scoffed. “You must be out of your mind.”

He slid in with a barrage of fists aimed at different points of Bug’s body. She raised her arms and deflected most of them. She let the last few get past her defenses, and took the blows on her sides.

With the force he was exerting, it was clear Davis was trying to break some of her ribs. I heard the crack from where I stood.

Davis had broken one of his hands.

He looked down at his mangled hand, and then back at Bug.

“What the hell are—?”

Bug unleashed a side kick that lifted him off his feet and sent him crashing against the far wall, where the weapons were kept.

He recovered quickly and regained his balance. Whatever pain he was feeling, he didn’t let it show as he grabbed a long metal staff.

“Are we doing weapons now?” Bug asked, as Davis stalked in her direction. She glanced quickly at me. “Port?”

“Don’t kill him, but make him regret picking up a weapon,” I said.
